Groundswell Unveils Six New Projects

Through Groundswell's Summer Leadership Institute 75 teens created six public art pieces this summer. Read more. Come celebrate at the following public unveilings:

"Not One More Death" In partnership with Transportation Alternative and Visual Resistance.Youth are creating a campaign to reclaim neighborhood streets in the wake of several traffic related deaths in downtown Brooklyn through the creation of two murals and a series of posters and stickers. Project Location: Butler Street and 3rd Ave, Downtown Brooklyn. Part of Groundswell's Organizing and Community Education Initiative.

"The Animation State" In partnership with Trust for Public Land, Future Leaders Institute and PS 242. Youth from middle school Future Leaders Institute are visually embodying Harlem’s past, present, and future through a mural that transforms the school playground. Elementary students are also creating mosaics as part of the project. Project Location: PS 242 Hans Christian Anderson Complex, 134 West 122nd Street, Harlem. Part of Groundswell's Great Walls series.

"Beautiful Migration": Young women are creating a large-scale mosaic celebrating environmental activism and women’s empowerment. Project Location: PS 503, 59th Street & 4th Ave, Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Part of Groundswell's Voices Her'd Program.

"Building Better Tomorows": A team of young men interviewed fathers of students at PS 24,  a bilingual school for Latin American immigrants, and are creating a mural that illustrates their journeys and desire for a better life. Project Location: PS24, 427 38th Street (at 4th Avenue), Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Part of Groundswell's Making His'tory Program.

"Weeksville Time Train": Youth working with seniors to create a mural at Hugh Gilroy Senior Center that brings to life Weeksville’s rich African-American heritage in partnership with Weeksville Heritage Center. Project Location: Hugh Gilroy Senior Center, 447 Kingsborough 4th Walk, Weeksville, Brooklyn. Part of Groundswell's Great Walls series.

"Art Builds Community, Community Creates Change: Young women are painting a large-scale mural exploring female empowerment, overcoming obstacles and the need for immigrant rights, gender equality and an end to all forms of discrimination.Project Location: MS 443/PS295, 330 18th Street at 6th Avenue, Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Part of Groundswell's Voices Her'd Program.
