Project Description
For “Women in the Park,” a group of six young women from Lehman High School worked with Montefiore Medical Center to create a panel that would explore women’s empowerment in health. The students engaged in a rigorous curriculum at Montefiore which covered women’s health and feminist art theory. They then moved into the image-making process with a Groundswell artist, using theatre, meditation, photography, and writing techniques. They explored how the body serves as a vehicle for expression and experience and how society impacts the experience of identity. Students created designs and images and then used these skills to create a mural to exhibit in the Montefiore Medical Center. The image depicts intergenerational women enjoying a healthful day in the park together and conveys the value of sharing experiences and knowledge. The image also celebrates the diversity found within the female community by depicting women of different ages, bodies, abilities, community roles, and identities.
“Women in the Park” is the first in a series of collaborations with Montefiore Medical Center that will beautify its facilities with murals that celebrate health in the community.
