Women in the Park

  • These women embody different roles but all enjoy getting together for activity in the park.

Project Description

For “Women in the Park,” a group of six young women from Lehman High School worked with Montefiore Medical Center to create a panel that would explore women’s empowerment in health. The students engaged in a rigorous curriculum at Montefiore which covered women’s health and feminist art theory. They then moved into the image-making process with a Groundswell artist, using theatre, meditation, photography, and writing techniques. They explored how the body serves as a vehicle for expression and experience and how society impacts the experience of identity. Students created designs and images and then used these skills to create a mural to exhibit in the Montefiore Medical Center. The image depicts intergenerational women enjoying a healthful day in the park together and conveys the value of sharing experiences and knowledge. The image also celebrates the diversity found within the female community by depicting women of different ages, bodies, abilities, community roles, and identities.

“Women in the Park” is the first in a series of collaborations with Montefiore Medical Center that will beautify its facilities with murals that celebrate health in the community.

Question about the Mural
What different social roles are represented in this mural? What roles do the women in your life play?
Research
The Feminist Art Movement began in the 1970s when artists began to advocate for the female voice in art and a greater diversity of perspectives represented in the art world. They experimented with process, form, and constructions of gender and identity.
