Project Description
Through Groundswell’s Segue program, juvenile offenders worked with artist Jess Poplawski to create a mosaic for the entryway of Casa de los Vecinos, a transitional housing residence for individuals living with mental illness. The mosaic welcomes all to Casa de los Vecinos with a message of hope, health, and home. The design, featuring budding trees with red flowers and fruit, frames the facility’s doorway and accentuates the architecture and moldings of the building on Pitt Street.
Fun Facts
Mosaics are one of the oldest art forms in the world. Some of the first mosaics were created using colored pebbles instead of tiles.
Create your own mosaic tiles from leftover egg shells. After cracking your eggs, wash and color the shells using vibrantly colored food dye. Separate your shells into separate piles and crush with a spoon or your hand.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 20 to 25% of the homeless population in the United States suffers from some form of severe mental illness.
